I'm using this thread for updates on the server move.

I've just opened up the archived forums at http://forum.watchthefootage.twwf.info/ . Logins are disabled for the archives so that the archive is preserved, but if you need anything edited, you can request it at the Archived forum edit requests thread. Filters are active on the archived forums, so links to ARG domains are rewritten (although not all the sites are up yet).

The forum.wtf.twwf.info alias will be working shortly, though you may want to give it an hour or so.

(If you have any comments about logins being disabled on the archive, or want to suggest that this be reversed, feel free to comment! I thought it would be the best idea, but am willing to be swayed otherwise.)

I've been taking a little bit of a break in getting the archived sites up; I apologise. I'm going to start again now.

My next target is the ezblog sites, and I'm going to try to make it easy for me to maintain them all through judicious use of symlinking, so that updating the software of one will update them all, rather than me having to repeat the update process for all 14 of them. This may or may not be doable, but I hope it is; it'd make things a lot easier for me. We'll see how it goes!

What about the timeline links? Can't we reclaim the old domain name and link it to the new server, so that we don't have to change anything?
I don't know how exactly DNS works.

We can have the old domain name for watchthefootage.com (and the other domains) and link it to the new server if we want - that's an option. It'll cost a bit more, though, since it'll mean we have two (or more) domains under our control instead of just one. (I plan to post about the possibility of donations after the whole archive is up.)

I will point out, though, that changing the timeline is something that people have already been doing for the sites that are up. I'm guessing that you'd prefer things not to be changed?

I'm so sorry that I've been so slow at this.

xovr.twwf.info is now up! Any links in the archive to xovr pages should now work; the Recap has been updated accordingly.

The main page will show a Forbidden error; this is how it was originally, too. Deep links will still work, however!

Annnd it turned out I forgot to remove the WIP login prompt that I use for sites that aren't ready to be opened up to the public. I've removed it now, so everything should be good!

The biggest problem is the ezblog sites - which is especially irritating because they're where most of the good stuff is, and I really want to bring them up.

The problem is that all the ezblog sites use WordPress, and some even use different versions of WordPress. WP is known for being targetted quite often for exploits, and I don't want to have to stay on top of updating every ezblog site individually.

I could convert the sites to use HTML, but the URLs would then change, so links wouldn't work - which defeats the point of archiving it in the first place. The new URLs would be *friendlier* for sure (they'd look something like http://westwitch.ezblog.twwf.info/116-r ... color.html instead of http://westwitch.ezblog.twwf.info/?p=116), but unless the latter URLs redirected to the former, they're not much use. (And unfortunately the archive's URL filter won't help much here; even if I did take out the title from the URL so that they could easily be transformed, that's not going to help with my aim of allowing people to just be able to switch out the ".co" for ".twwf.info" and have it work.)

There are ways to get the URLs to redirect (whether noticeably or not) using scripting - and I'll use those if I can't think of any better ideas - but they're kind of hacky, basically involving looking through all the HTML files for a matching filename and using that. Also, it's not just the entry URLs that would need changed like that - the URLs for each month would also have to go through the same script. (Of course, converting to HTML would also completely disable any dynamic features on the site, but that's kind of the point.)

Basically, I have three main objectives, and any solution has to provide all three:

Keep the visual style of each site as close to the original as possible.
Allow access through the URLs that the old sites used, except for the ".twwf.info" substitution. (Bonus points if the URL that the user sees once on the site is the same as the one that would have been used during the ARG, though I suppose that's not absolutely necessary.)
Be as free from vulnerabilities as possible, so that I don't have to worry about updating the software all the time.

I think I might try to code the script I mentioned. I'm honestly thinking that converting to HTML is probably the way to go.

Though there's one particular piece that would be nice for us to get, the still-unsolved riddle from Rick. Could you copy the text into a post here in the forums so we could tackle it again? The relevant page was On Various Experiments.

For that particular one I do have a suggestion, though. Instead of restoring and uploading the blog or even just the page, it'd be nice to get that post as a thread here on the forums. Nothing fancy, just a copy paste of the post as is on the archive page. The comments aren't part of the puzzle... And this kind of copy shouldn't render it unsolvable, right? <_< >_>
