[First up is the reason for this thread, and a bit of a late anniversary present, I tried to make a class roughly based on our activities during the game]
Metaguard
The boundaries between this world and others are fragile, and sometimes easily broken. A Metaguard is someone who understands the power of the worlds we create ourselves, and so devotes themselves to keeping dangerous characters on the other side out, and in extreme cases, sending back what has already crossed over.
Making a Metaguard (out of you)

Class Skills (4 + Int modifier per level, ×4 at 1st level)
The Metaguard's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Gather Information (Cha), Knowledge (all skills individually) (Int), Listen (Wis), Perform (Cha), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Spot (Wis)
Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Metaguard.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Metaguards are proficient with all simple and martial weapons. Metaguards are proficient with light, medium, and heavy armor.
Analyze: At first level, a Metaguard can observe a target to learn their class, alignment, and level. At level 6, this ability extends to the target's spell list, if applicable. Upon reaching level 10, they may also learn the target's armor class and remaining hit points.
Create Fiction: At level 3, a Metaguard gains the ability to use a Craft (ficion) check to write a story about a specific fictional character that will send them across the Fourth Wall if used in a successful Refictionalization attempt. Additional attempts require more stories to be written.
Refictionalization: If a Create Fiction attempt is successful, the acquired story can be used to send the specified character back across the Fourth Wall. The Refictionalization process requires a Perform (storytelling) check of DC 10+(target's level), takes 1d10 rounds to complete and must be done in a way that the character in question can hear the story being read.
Overwhelm: Touch attack. The Metaguard establishes a link to the target and proceeds to unload large amounts of their considerable knowledge directly into the target's mind. At 4th level this dazes the target for 1 round/level-2, at 8th level, adds confusion for 1 round, and at 14th, adds 1d3 Int damage.
Power of Friendship: The Metaguard can make Perform checks to grant random positive effects to the party.
Create Wall Fragment: Allows the closing of a Wall break without sending the associated character through. Requires Wisdom check against DC 20+Int modifier. Can only be used once per year.
Create Guardian: Uses a Craft (fiction) check against DC 30 to create a character on the other side of the Fourth Wall to assist the Metaguard in their missions. A Guardian adds 5 to rolls made for a Refictionalization attempt.
Summon Guardian: Manifests a Metaguard's Guardian without creating a break in the Fourth Wall. The Guardian may assist the Metaguard with their quest until the end of the day, at which point they will be sent back across the Wall. Usable once per month.
Eldritch Program: The Metaguard casts a spell created by the leader of the organization which gives a +20 bonus to Refictionalization attempts, but only if the Metaguard is in a party which includes at least 3 other adventurers.
Administrative Access: You just broke another hole in the wall. Why would you do this? Do you enjoy damaging reality for your own amusement?
Campaign Information
Playing a Metaguard
Religion: Metaguards can subscribe to any religion they choose, and in fact this extends to any possible belief system, regardless of notability or obscurity.
Other Classes: Metaguards get along well with just about any class, but this often leads to them attempting to figure out just how their companions fit into their own stories.
Combat: The Metaguard is best used for a finishing attack through their Refictionalization ability, but can easily serve a support role to their party.
Advancement: Once the Metaguard's essential abilities are acquired, they can take any class levels, but they most benefit from levels as a bard, improving their support capabilities.
Metaguards in the World
"If you think about it we are the perfect people to save the world.
When the hero in a show is following the same tired trope who are the ones that point it out? That's right we do. We know every single piece of media to date and we know every trope to avoid and every trope to follow. We are tvtropes, and we are the last line of defense in a world with a broken wall."
—Lordxana, Human Metaguard
Metaguards tend to be more social with other adventurers, as more allies help them more effectively track down and send back the characters they seek out.
Daily Life: A Metaguard is likely to get out of their grungy bed at an inn somewhere, meander outside, and search for leads on whatever character they are searching for. When not on a mission, they tend to consume as many aspects of culture as they can, documenting common themes in the stories they come across in effort to enhance their capabilities.
Notables: Adell, Sicon112, GuestUser17(min-maxed), narrativedilettante,
Organizations: Most Metaguards are part of a single organization which offers assistance to them and sends them on missions to recover any characters who have crossed of the Fourth Wall
NPC Reactions: Metaguards' work is in effect saving the world from destruction, so people who actually know what they do tend to react well to a Metaguard's presence, assuming the person in question is not a character who would rather not be sent back over the Wall.
Metaguard Lore
Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) can research Metaguards to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
Knowledge (Arcana)
DC Result
5 Metaguards believe strongly in the power of storytelling.
10 Metaguards are skilled with a variety of weapons and armor, and can seal up dimensional tears.
15 Metaguards work for an organization devoted to maintaining the integrity of the Fourth Wall.
20 Metaguards seek out fictional characters who have managed to cross the Fourth Wall in order to send them back through a process known as Refictionalization.
I'm just a guy who wants to help save the world.
