Or a pilot, actually-- to clarify, those are NOT the same as the mech pilots, right? *would not want to be a mech pilot*

Ah, things said in the chat can be so easily lost.
The OP lists pilots and mech pilots separately, so I think you're safe in your assumption.
Oh, or it would be fun to be an engineer. Partly because I'm a real-life engineer (well, student) but of course this kind of engineer is more like a mechanic than like my field of study... oh, with elephants. Like I said, early days. So not attached to anything.

So two new ideas
1st: Soldiers and Mech pilots have been infused with nano machines that allow them to control their weapons and mech's and enter a burst mode that gives their weapons and mechs five times strength but leave them unable to move after ten minutes of use in a single day.
2nd: Remove vice captain, cook, and doctor and let fights and mech pilots take those jobs when they are not fighting.

Honestly, I think everyone should double as a fighter/mech pilot, since we're pirates and all, not to mention nobody ever wants the role of the non-combatant in an RP like this.

I'd be happy with a non-combatant role, but this kind of combination of roles might make the thing more balanced. I don't think it would be necessary, but I'm not totally opposed.

I quite like the first idea with nano machines.

1st: Future does not necessarily mean nanotech... We'd be getting more power, instead of having to work with limitations... The mechs and weapons themselves could have an overdrive function, which would serve the same function without making the characters super. If the players have mech control nanobots then someone (everyone?) will actually
be a Lagann... May or may not be what you're going for.
2nd: I'll agree that it'll make for a more balanced game, in the sense that everyone will have the potential to be at any scene. Battle or not. But then, roleplaying a non-combatant isn't necessarily a bad thing. As long as the RP has a lore front the "exclusivity" goes both ways. Have a look at
Artemis for what I mean, each player is fundamentally assigned to one task, and while only the weapons guy will get to shoot things, navigation through asteroid belts is up to someone else. As long as the idea isn't to run the First RP ~ In the Sky, then the non combat roles might be just as interesting to play than the combat ones.

Personally, I'm more a fan of manual controls as opposed to psycommu, but both work, it depends entirely on the feel you intend to give the RP. The sleek pictures you posted are equally great for either system, in my opinion. Another thing, if all pilots have the nanotech, that must mean tech is fairly high that even pirates have them, yes? So I'm guessing the role of doctor would be regulated to "hey you oh look you're injured stick yourself into the machine alright cool you're well now". Not entirely, of course, just an oversimplistic generalisation.
I would say keep the separate roles, but that works only if battles aren't the main thing in this RP. Diplomacy, regular life on board, I suppose the role of a cook would be get boring after the first few posts, so maybe that can be a role played by pilots. I suppose a single role can't be exclusive, maybe the doctor happens to be a cook, etc etc. Again, depending on the style of the RP, you can either diversify the non-combat roles or narrow it down.
Eh, I haven't said anything new. With elephants.

I quite like the idea of an overdrive mode, as well, although it might be kind of silly to overgeneralize what exactly that is. What if each Flight Frame, being different, has its own specifications for what exactly an overdrive mode is and does? Etcetera.

A change to the first part of the two new ideas. Scratch nano machines for Flight Frame units. They have an overdrive core inside of them that increases certain aspects of the frame by two hundred percent.
As for the doctors role, it is more then just put them in a machine, they have to diagnose, do surgery, and other things of importance.

Um... sorry I think I'm being sort of dumb, and have no idea exactly how you do this? Lookiing at what other people are doing has not made this any clearer for me. So if I wanted to be a soldier, I'd make it 100-1?

You guys did it wrong. Copy the post directly above yours, add 1 to the roles that you find that you'd play. I'll consolidate it and you continue from my post. Not that the way you're doing can't be used, but it'll require Xana to track each post individually later.

Another way to do it would be signing up with the names, the amount of names would be the numbers, just without numbers. Has the benefit of telling just who is interested in what along with what tasks are most popular.

Not going the soldier route because I'm getting bored of the normal style of killing crap. (Also, one hundred soldiers and one hundred mech pilots, but only one mechanic, one doctor, and one cook? Even a military ship wouldn't have THAT kind of disparity between crew members, I believe, and these are pirates.)

I'm pretty sure the "one hundred" is just a placeholder to remind us that while the other roles are capped at one or three people, there's no limit to how many of us can take the mech pilot or soldier role.
