I think I'll be good for a dungeon trawl myself on either Thursday after school or Friday once I wake up. :)

Ok... on the Blessing: Holy Water Power that Sicon just got his hands on... That... con artist... He had to get out alive... Well, Elephants.

Essentially, you take time and effort to bless water, it burns undead like acid, and works as a minor healing of sorts, say, it can stop a bleeding, dull some pain or take the edge off of poison. Enough to save someone's life in a pinch, but won't miraculously cure someone who got his arm ripped out or something like that. (That's stuff for a Miracle, not a simple Blessing)

Also, since you're able to create these effects, you're able to recognize them as well. Given a chance to see it, you can tell if something is blessed or not, even if you don't recognize what kind of effect it has. (Like something beyond your skills to make)

Unless, you know, I already recognize it anyway because it came from a fellow Executor's corpse and it was a very common strategy back in the day.

Ok, to get a beta time for the idea, I'll post it now for you guys to think and tell me your opinion on it.

After Sicon's awesome, suicidal, and epic exploration of the Underground under a timer of 24h, and the following discussion with Adell about how to make it more interesting for the players...

The problem: We can't effectively make you fail a quest, considering the format of the RP, without outright stating that you will fail (bad), or setting an arbitrary time limit (we seem to work well with deadlines), after which, if you didn't post, the quest is considered failed.

The goal: We want to make the choices you make have meaning. They are already doing so, of course, the cliff edges Shane and Tohr wrote into Quest 0 are now part of the first Boss fight. The key found by Blur and Endless opened the Underground.

The plan: Each turn (starting from the next one, the Boss Fight will be under no such restriction) will have a global time limit of one full week. If you can't think up and write a quest resolution in time, we will write a failure resolution. Say, for instance, on Quest 1, if no resolution was posted. The missing mage would have died, the two takers would come back home empty handed.

This means that, if you can't make it in time, you can still drop it and ask someone to take over, but that will not extend the deadline. And considering that the Underground will be under much more strict timers, I believe that one week is enough to write 1 quest.

The general idea is that the Castle is moving forward, it won't stand in stasis, forever waiting for one or two quests to be completed. It adds a greater measure of consequences to your actions (and ramps up the complexity by ten levels to us poor GMs), giving more weight to the decisions and adds a game element that is the possibility of failure, which I believe will just make everyone try harder and be even more awesome.

Thoughts?

I think that seems fair. One week should be enough time for most people under most circumstances, and if someone can't complete a quest in that time, it should be easy enough to make that known so that someone else can complete it.

An effort should be made to make sure people know when they have a quest: If someone isn't online for a couple of days and doesn't realize they've been assigned something, that could screw up the timing. I trust that the GMs will try to keep everyone informed so that we don't wind up with people unwittingly wasting quest time.

Actually, we wouldn't just do that.

Normally, players who are assigned a quest are also PM-ed on either the forums or the chat.

That way they know when the quest is assigned and etc.

Another thing sicon brought up in chat. If you can't complete a quest, let one of us know so we can (somehow) complete the assignment. We're aiming for 100% completion. :)

Sounds good to me. I guess this RP will be running for around 99 weeks then :P

Or longer, if each floor is split into main quests and floor boss, like this one.

:D Okay, I'll give it 3 years maximum. But if it lasts longer I don't mind :P

It's okay that it will last a long time, because one of the advantages to this RP is that there's no need of a real commitment. I might not still be doing this in a year, but people who want to continue will be. (I might still be doing this in a year, who knows, but if I had to commit to that right now, I wouldn't be joining in.)

Besides, say that one year for now you have to stop for whatever reason... Then six months you find that, shock, you do have time/interest again! Your character is still waiting here for you to join in again. :D

As long as we don't get some sort of drop to lower floors...

I say it could work, and if it ends up not really working then you can always drop it as a rule. I think as long as our actions continue to effect the castle, that is the most important part :)

Oh hey I thought of something. How will the one week limit be enforced with regard to boss fights? Will there be one week for the entire boss fight, or one week for each part of the boss fight? I kind of think we should make the boss fights harder by making it one week for the whole thing, but I worry that I'll wind up regretting that as we get further into the game.

For this one, there's no time limit at all.

For the other ones it can be split into more than one turn, or it can just have a higher time limit to account for the continuity requirement... Say, 5 days (instead of 7) for each step. That would mean, this one should theoretically have a time limit of 15 days. More time total, to account for the higher complexity, but still less time per piece to raise the difficulty of the fight. That said, if the first step gets posted in day 14 and the other 2 are ready to go up in half an hour, it's perfectly fine, as long as the involved duos are aware of each other's progress, you could even wait to post the 3 pieces at once.

I... Just thought this up so... I'm not sure it's a good idea myself. Just trying to iterate ideas here. I might come up with something better.

So yeah, I'm considering a run through the dungeons soon, and I don't intend to go solo. I think Narra volunteered to come along on Saturday, but in case I misread something or issues arise, anyone else care to join in?

I should still be up for it tomorrow. We can work stuff out in the morning.

All right, then, Narra and I are ready and willing for a run through the bonus dungeon of hell now, so we're making an official request for a mission prompt. :P

Nice post, Adell. Not that it is a bad thing, but I noticed that your post is a lot like Rurouni Kenshin setups, what with the whole "ex-killer fighting someone from his past, who he isn't strong enough to beat because he is no longer attempting to kill, and against whom he must fight an uphill battle" thing. You ever watched that?

I'm familiar with the series, I've seen one of the movies and a few episodes from the show. Even if its been a long time since I've seen it, I'd say it probably had some influence here.

I remember watching Kenshin on Toonami. I should really get a few volumes of the manga sometime...

...back on topic, I did absolutely no writing today for the dungeon trawl, besides throwing ideas around. -_- And tomorrow I've got plenty of stuff going on... I'm starting to get worried...
