It's not like she couldn't get wood chips from the lumberjacks. And besides, while this specific format of spell wasn't foreseen, Luca and Asha were already working towards that kind of goal for a while, so it's perfectly reasonable that she built a stockpile of blank ones over the time she spent in the castle. One wonders how exact the carvings even have to be to work. Would breaking them 'break' the effect', as in Supernatural?
When Legias fought with Luca, she shattered one he attempted to use on her before he could activate it. So breaking them would, assuming they had not already activated it, prevent them from using the talisman.
How I've been describing them so far, holding the talisman gives you the specific knowledge needed to cast that spell (which spell is infused in the talisman depends on the rune carved into it), once you cast it once however, the talisman loses the magic charged within it and the knowledge disappears. The release of magic from the talisman also usually causes it to break.
