Lori was angry. Though upon further introspection, she discovered that her anger was mostly self-derision, and unhelpful for the current moment. Closing her eyes, she took a few breaths to increase her focus. A minute passed, and she was calm.

A revolt had occurred in the city. A very inconvenient, utterly ridiculous revolt caused by none other than the lieutenant of the Guard. Lori felt responsible in a way, her loreknights were possibly the best informed as to both the dangers of the castle and the people inside. The mob of people armed with spells however, kept her from being able to assist Legias in a proper timeframe.

Turning to a shorter girl, a recent addition who had automatically assumed the title of page , she spoke quietly, “Close the gates. Let them exhaust themselves on the walls first, then dump cold water on them if they aren’t gone by morning. No one is to be allowed in, except the guard Captain, should she decide to appear.”

-----

Legias was fuming by the time she barged through the doors to Lori’s study. “So you’ll just sit here and do nothing while these people tear the city apart, Lori?” She asked, slamming the door.

“It’s a pleasure to talk to you as well, captain.” Lori remained at her desk, replying without so much as taking her eyes up from the book she currently read. “As to your question, yes. Indeed I shall sit here and enjoy a good read while our dear, mouth-breathing citizens tear this lovely city apart.”

“Damn you-”

“Now, before you begin throwing insults.” Lori looked straight into the guard Captain’s eyes. “Sit down and listen, if you even care about trying to disperse these mobs.”

“I have no time for your games, Lori. I need the Loreknights out there to help keep the people safe!”

“Such impatience.” The mage stood up and walked toward a balcony overlooking the city. Lori had the build of a warrior, not unlike Legias herself. She waved for Legias to follow and look at the city. “The revolt began this morning, and we already have areas that are completely razed in three different parts of the city.” She pointed in the direction of a faint pillar of smoke. “Freeslums is about to be added to that number. So, do not assume I’m staying in the library because I don’t understand what’s at stake, sister.”

“Then why do you refuse to act?” Legias asked, holding herself from leaving immediately.

“Because they’re not simply rioters. There’s some manner of spell involved, a spell that infuriated the first group and threatens to spread even now. And no matter how many hands you have to restrain them, unless that magic is dispelled, they’ll just grow in numbers. If the Loreknights go now, while we are still unable to counter their magic, we’ll simply condemn everyone.”

“Typical...” Legias sneered. “You’re defending a plan that’ll save everyone in the months to come, but you won’t lift a finger for the people dying right now.”

“Indeed. If there was a viable option to mobilize the Loreknights at the present time, I would have taken that option. Unfortunately, there is no such an option, nor is one likely to present itself in the near future.” Lori said calmly, blue eyes boring into Legias. “So, my Knights and myself will bide our time, let the trash take itself out.”

“I’d say I’m disappointed...” Legias stepped out of the balcony, this time to leave the library and be done with that conversation. “But I didn’t expect anything else from you.”

“Be careful not to die.” Lori commented idly, returning to her books. “I do so hate funerals.”

The page, still standing in the room stared in silence for a couple of minutes before finally finding her voice again. “Ma’am... That... I...”

“Speak your mind, you’ll just take longer if you keep stuttering.”

“That’s not what you told us. That’s not why we’re standing ground!”

“The Captain is not a mage, she’s not a tactician and most of all, she wouldn’t listen to me anyway. She wants to fix things now, and she’ll take any risks to accomplish that, even if they are foolish risks and doomed plans. At least, if she’s already angry enough, there’s no room for that cloud to take control of her.”

“But, she... You called her ‘sister’... And she hates you now...”

“She already hated me before today,” Lori’s attention trailed back to the book on her table, an old explorer’s log book dealing with his research on kobolds. “Come now, we have research to do. Hopefully before that idiot gets herself killed.”
