I heard about that place, it sounds kind of interesting honestly, guess I'll find out later. I think the fact that you're saying not to go, just makes me more interested.

Hi, I'm Steve. I'm a 22-year-old currently living in Beautiful BC...
I draw a lot (like my avvie? made it myself!), and I'm a big fan of web video.

I came here from tvtropes and spent an instructive week or two working my way through the timeline, before finally giving in and making an account.
I'm a bit of an introvert, though, so I'll probably just keep being a lurker... unless I see something that I just HAVE to comment on (I guess if you saw my... one other post, you'll know that I'm also a HUGE crypto geek).

That's... about all there is to say about me, really. Pretty much just an average guy.

FINALLY another one from my homeland! Welcome, Steve! YAY Canada!
Unless you're talking about a different BC. That would be annoying. Also, that's STILL clear across the continent from me, but... still. YAY.

Hello all, I am Vladimír, student in Prague (Czech republic) but formerly from Slovakia. I am still trying to catch up with whole this stuff, it might take me few days, after all, my brain can´t handle so much information in short time without chaos. And also, don´t look on my grammar, sometimes it is really really bad.

Oh, hey, so after re-reading this whole thread for important information, I realized that I never introduced myself (though I guess Sicon's announcement in this thread of '7 girls now' is a pretty good subtle indication of when I showed up).

Now that everyone who matters probably already knows who I am, when and why and how I came, and where I'm from (as well as much more of my life story), hi!

I'm Qara-Xuan, but why don't you just call me Qara? I'm from Canada. I am a lady. I have paranoia. I came here from tvtropes, about 2 weeks late even though I'd been searching all summer for a follow-up to Echo Chamber.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm not really sure where I'm going with this post. I'd wait for someone to welcome me, but that seems silly, especially as it looks like I've been doing that for the past couple pages. And I can't really welcome myself. That would be sillier.

Hi, I'm Brendan. I'm a cognitive anthropologist. In other words, I research how tropes and other phenomena work in the mind, in the context of the living environment.

My focus is on the reality side of things, but of course, that can get subjective! [1]

I found TV Tropes in 2009, as I was thinking about ideas for a web series, but it wasn't until early 2011 that I realized how applicable many of them were to making sense of my own life and situation. I also realized how relevant tropes could be to helping people understand a complex world, especially given how many of us have grown up being more influenced by a media-saturated environment, than a single cultural tradition.

I'm interested in the intersection between psychiatry, education, and decision science. I'm interested in understanding how people in general learn to make sense of the world, figure out how they are, and their place in the world, both at a given point in time, and through the course of their lives. One of the most interesting sides to that is the question of how much people can actually change their circumstances, vs. how much they are just stuck with a given hand in life.

I've done a *lot* of online research over the past two years, trying to figure out a way out of a very complex dilemma. And that actually has parallels with the WTF/TWWF storyline. I didn't find Echo Chamber until earlier this year, and *wow* was that a find. I had actually done such things as linking the Show within a Show trope page to people in my life, trying to get them to help brainstorm a way to make some kind of show based based on my situation. Fortunately, AverageJoe has already done that, so maybe I don't have to.

Mysterious Employer is my favorite Echo Chamber episode. I could identify with the challenge of needing to making a trope-based show that was "more than just a vlog," but also the confusion about what exactly that should be. There are a million vlogs out there already, and I knew I needed to make something more sophisticated. The *what* is still a work in progress.

In fact, I'm looking to make a course -- a sort of massively open online course (MOOC) that blends in with some kind of augmented reality game that is more reality-based than most. In fact, I'm looking to develop a toolkit for people to make life decisions, including about education, employment, shopping, and investing, and in general about diagnosing and dealing with complex situations.

So, I could write a lot more, but that's an introduction. Thanks to Mr. Administrator for the advice on how to jump into the mix.

[1] Regarding subjective reality, see my reply to this thread, "What are your thoughts on subjective reality?"

(There, I reference trope trope Platonic Cave, The Truman Show, and a TED talk that illustrates growing up surrounded by cameras.)

Welcome to the Tram! We really do have an awful lot of backlog, but you can get a quick update on everything important in the timeline. You probably know about that already, but, just in case. xD

Or maybe just ask around, as I get that you're somewhat familiar with our plot already. ;)

Thanks for the welcomes.

Quara-Xuan, thanks for getting me updated. I followed you on Twitter, because of your interactions with Mr. Administrator there. It wasn't clear to me at the time what Demosthenes was: a fictional character, a real character, a real player, a fictional player, a GM proxy, or what. The interaction I have in mind is already linked to from Mr. Administrator's section on the Character page:

https://twitter.com/YouHaveFailedUs/sta ... 7078853632

That character page cites the tweet as an example of No Social Skills on "their" part, but there are additional levels of significance in that interaction. When I noticed it, I saw a more active narrative playing out than many of the more puzzle-like and script-driven interactions I'd seen in the past. There was a power struggle of sorts, a questioning of the authority's strategy.

As such, I saw an opportunity to jump into the storyline, by answering Mr. Administrator's direct question."@DemosthenesWall WHAT TERMS DO THEY BETTER RELATE TO?"

This implies that there might be *better* methods of relating, however rhetorical Mr. Administrator meant to be while asking the question. If there are *better* terms, there are *worse* ones, which might make them, "A BAD IDEA." Who's to judge?

Well, Robert McKee's analysis of persuasion leads to one right answer: persuade with story, not with threats! The threats, after all, are already part of the story, and AverageJoe is dealing with quite enough terror as it is, so much so that it's hard for me to watch some of his videos.

So, I answered Mr. Administrator's question with this video from McKee:

https://twitter.com/screenstorming/stat ... 4806026241

And I referenced McKee's key point: "coercion backfires, b/c ppl... eventually see through the ruse and see they've been mishandled."

Who the Hell is Robert McKee, and what does he have to do with this story -- I mean, this game? Well, a character based on McKee was featured in Charlie Kaufman's film, Adaptation.

Here's the iconic scene, in my mind, anyway:

"Adaptation." (2002) -- Screenplay Seminar Scene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHVqxD8PNq8

The description on that video sums it up well:
[ This scene from 2002's "Adaptation." very well incorporates all clichés of the writing (or any creative) process: the urgent desire to express oneself, the inconfidence appearing when evaluating one's own work, and the apparently self-confident and emotionally strong "outside world": ]

The creative process involved in being a writer who is in turn writing one's self into a story is a key theme in Adaptation:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/F ... Adaptation
"All this plays against the raging existential crisis running incessantly through Charlie's mind. The theme of "adaptation" gains a triple meaning throughout the film, referring not only to Charlie's attempt to adapt Orleans' novel, but also to the evolutionary marvel of orchids, and also to Charlie's own attempt to evolve, to "learn how to live in the world"."

But Adaptation came out a decade ago, and dramatic methods have now evolved into the vast potential of alternate reality games, which put storywriting privileges into the hands of players. And after all, "all the world is a stage, and the men and women merely players," right? I wonder if Shakespeare could have imagined his players co-creating alternate reality games!

And so, the cracks in the wall...

Oh god yes I saw Adaptation for a class I'm trying to switch out of. I can see the comparison.
(And thank you. This may be the first time someone mistook me for a GM? Now I can finally join those ranks!)

...Okay, I'll stop derailing the intro thread now.
