Spy greetings

One thing I like about spies more than anything, is that they always come up with the greatest ways to greet their contacts.

"The sun is shining...."
"....but the ice is slippery."

While it's initially to make sure they are the right contact, they often put philosophical meaning to them.

I was often wondering if any of you can think of good ones. This could be from scratch or from media sources.

Not spies but assassin's:

"What is the colour of the night?"
"Sanguine, my brother?"

It's quite effective if you know Sanguine is latin for blood.

If it were up to me, I'd have the question and answer have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

"How much wood could a woodshank shank if a woodshank could shank wood?"
(three-second pause)
"Come at me, bro!"

"FYI, I am a Spy."

Are the flowers blooming in Houston?
Yes, but they are dying in Alaska.

"Death comes on swift wings."

"So does airline food, but you don't hear me complaining."

It never made sense to me to have nonsense call/response cues for spies. Wouldn't that be almost advertising that you're a spy, by randomly saying nonsense sentences to people?

I'd prefer something much more mundane:

"I think the weather is going to be even nicer tomorrow."
"It's certainly better than back home; I'm afraid of flooding."

True, but what if somebody said that accidentally or something like that?

That's why I tried to make it oddly specific; something that you'd be extremely unlikely to say by accident, but not puzzlingly bizarre if it was overheard. I guess you could also do a counter question-answer, just to be sure. Like the second person following up with "Does the traffic around here get terrible when it floods?" which would be answered by "Only near downtown, when the storm drains fill up."

Yeah I can see your point (although where I live ANY comments about flooding are actually pretty damn likely, especially at this time of year...)

British spies probably go with something closer to, "I think the sun might actually break through for a couple minutes."

Now if you said that you would get laughed at.

That or saying "Margret Thatcher was awesome", around here anyway... although in this part of the country it might also get you a beer thrown over your head.

Yeah, that wouldn't go down well where I live.

The best "greeting", in my opinion, would be the one you don't have to say to random people. Like fiddling around with your phone, and then saying "dammit" to no one in particular. The other spy should have a pretty specific response, though, otherwise you'll end up with the Diamond Arm plot (the other guy accidentally says a smuggler's password, Hilarity Ensues).

My favorite ones are often the ones that take the longest. I often wonder if someone would ever do one that looks like two people arguing.

I've just found out that I have 399 posts, so I'm just typing nonsense into the window to get 400 before going to sleep. :gurt: Yawn.

Grats! Welcome to the ranks of those who actually think post count means something! Now, I just gotta get into the six hundreds...

:? Wait, so we're coming up with spy "passwords" so to speak?

I think the best one would where 2 people are arguing and then they just randomly burst into a perfectly synchronized Charleston.

Now THAT is the ultimate secret handshake. One question though: what if one of them ran out of feet gas for their feet rockets?

I think I'd go for complete non-sequitur:

"The robot meteorologist has vampire fangs."
"How do you spell 'Uzbekistan'?"
