Game: Exquisite Corpse: Information

Postby Scarab on Sat Jun 08, 2013 4:27 pm

So who around here would like to play a game of Exquisite Corpse?
Exquisite Corpse is a game thought up by a bunch of surrealists. It’s designed to help people come up with ideas. In the real world, it works like this: You divide a sheet of paper down the middle. On the left you write a list of Adjectives/Verbs, then fold it over so nobody can see what you wrote. You then pass the paper to another person. That person then fills in the other side of the paper with a list of nouns. You then swap paper with someone else again and now you have a list of complete random combinations of nouns and adjectives.
The end result looks a little like this:

Image

I thought maybe we could play a game of it here. So here’s the plan.

  • Everyone writes a completely random list of adjectives/verbs, and a list of the same number of nouns. Keep that list secret.
  • You are then paired randomly with another person, with whom you will swap your list of adjectives.
  • You are also paired with another person with whom to swap your list of nouns. This leaves you with a list of nouns and adjectives different from the ones you started with.
  • You then pick one of those adjective-noun combinations and write a short story or drabble based on it. So for example, for the example above I might choose the combination Exquisite Corpse and have to write a short story about... well, an exquisite corpse.
  • You get the idea.

Anyone up for it? :D

There is one question though. How long should each list be?
I assume it would be ideal if all lists are of the same length, so... When do we start? :)

I reckon about ten or so would be enough for unique combinations. You can start to write your lists whenever you like starting from now. Before I leave this evening, I'll leave a reminder for those who haven't, and we'll do the swaps around tomorrow. You can send the people you're paired with your words via PM, so as to keep them all secret until the end.

I believe we have JackAlsworth, Guyshane (maybe), Pixelmage, SpiritfChaos, Eli_Gone_Crazy, Qara-Xuan Zenith, NarrativeDilettante, Victin, and IslaKariese playing.

So there you go, your requirements are

  • List of ten verbs/adjectives
  • List of ten nouns
I'm playing too, btw :3

Should I feel special that my name's in bold while the others are italicized, or is that just a typo? ;)

I think I'd like to play it. I've also seen a variant of this game in which you write down stuff like what, who, where, why, how, with whom, etc. to form short stories or sentences. It was fun.

Just to throw a suggestion... maybe rename this thread to Exquisite Corpse Discussion, and then make a new thread for Exquisite Corpse Stories? That way we have all the stories condensed in the same place... *OCD*

I started to think if I wasn't too evil with my adjectives and nouns... Then I thought "screw it" and decided to keep the most unusual words.

Right, as we speak I'm running up a list of who will be swapping with whom. You have ONE HOUR starting from now to get your words done, before I post the people you have to swap with.

If you aren't sure you're playing, make your mind up now, I'm making the list. Can you at least do the words, even if you don't actually write anything? That means I won't have to redo this table I'm doing.

Please do not send the words to me. You send them to the person you're paired up with. :P

Geeze, if I realised how hard it was gonna be to work this put, Id have suggested an easier method of mixing these things up.
Anyway, what follows is a list of the names of all the players.

Instructions
  • Send your adjectives to the individual in red.
  • Send your nouns to the individual in blue.
  • No swapping results with anybody else.
  • Write a single story based on one of the combinations of nouns and adjectives. So the third adjective on that list, links with the third noun on the nouns list. Do not just pair them up at total random, that defies the point of the game :P
  • Do not post your lists here on the thread. Just Pm or email them to your partners.
  • If you don't have time to do the stories, that's fine but please remember to turn in your lists to your partners
  • Please post your completed stories here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1217
