I FINALLY did something major on TV Tropes-sorted the entire Cool Guns subpages into folders! They used to be really long articles that you had to scroll through to get to your favourite Handgun/SMG/Rifle/Shotgun/LMG/MG/RPG/Grenade Launcher, so I decided to save everyone the pain of doing that by sorting all of them into folders.

(It wasn't that hard, actually. I'm surprised.)

Sorry, I just wanted to rant about something that was a little too extensive for me to get across on Twitter:

I hate the 'Can I/May I' argument in school. I hate it, even though it's actually not a big deal. It's just, when you're in class, and the teacher makes a point of making you say 'May I' instead of 'Can I' before they let you do anything, I feel the need to go off. I can say 'May I', I really can. But if I ask 'Can I' and their response is 'I don't know, can you?', I feel the overwhelming urge to say 'Gee, I don't know. Will you let me out of the classroom so that I can go down the hall, go to a bathroom, relieve myself, and come back to class? Can I go to the bathroom, or will you continue to be an overbearing Grammar Nazi and hold my physical needs over my head until I conform to the relatively ridiculous need of yours to use the words 'May I', even though you know perfectly well what I mean? For example, I'm just as capable of walking out those doors without your express permission as I am of knocking you upside the head, because I somehow get the feeling that asking "May I punch you in the face?" as opposed to "Can I punch you in the face?" won't change the meaning much from your point of view. So, sir or madame, you tell me. Can I go to the bathroom."

Phew. Rant over, continue with your regularly scheduled program.

May I vs Can I is a pretty silly grammatical hang-up. And this is coming from someone who has a lot of grammatical hang-ups.

EDIT: And by this I mean, caring about which one people use is silly. Looking at my comment that seemed like maybe it wasn't totally clear.

I know it's a trivial thing, but really that's the point. Any child who knows decent English knows the technical difference between 'Can I' and 'May I', but don't nail it into their heads like that. You can dress up your hammer with as much humor as possible, but it doesn't make the insistence any less stupid, in my opinion. I had one teacher who said, "I don't know, can you? I sure hope you can. You're in for a very uncomfortable life you can't, you know." Granted, that's funny. It made the class laugh and remember to use 'May I' in her presence, but that's just it. In Real Life, no one cares which word you use to ask for permission to do something. The only ones who do receive mild to intense scorn over it because it's unnecessary and only makes you look like a douche, even to those too young to know what the word means.

So yes, o beloved 6th grade teacher. I'll use 'May I' to ask you for something. But don't think I'm not rolling my eyes at you as soon as I know you're not looking.

I went to see The Woman in Black (the play) yesterday.

Fun fact: I read that webcomic too, and at one point when I was trawling through the comments (I want to say it was on the "A switf jap becomes two dolphins!" page), and I saw one you posted there - same avatar and everything. Kay, so... my glasses broke. Not badly, not like someone stepped on them or anything. But one of the little nose-rest pieces just fell off without warning. It led to a very funny exchange between Momma and me - she often takes them to clean them, and when she asked I let her, and after a few seconds she was all, 'When were you gonna tell me the little nose piece fell off?' and sure enough it was missing and I got panicky like, 'That was there when I gave those to you, Mom.' And she panicked and was like, 'NO THEY WEREN'T I SWEAR!' But it turns out they were and the piece was in her lap but whatever.

Now my glasses are broken and Momma's gonna take them in to get both nose pieces replaced but in order to cope for the rest of today and tomorrow I had to dig for some of my older glasses but the thing about doing that is that it reminds me of just how badly my eyesight has gotten over the past ten years, give or take. And now the best pair I could find has left me with the visual capabilities of a half-blind cyclops. One eye is worse than the other, but back when these were made, it wasn't, so with these on I have one eye that is only good for seeing color and the other is still obviously worse than with my current glasses.

Good lord, the things these bits of crap are doing to my depth perception...

It's worse for me, I guess-years of gaming takes a toll on your eyes.

Heh, I don't even have gaming as an excuse. I have astigmatism. Which is a fun way of saying there are bits of my eye bending itself out of shape as I grow older, and which I've come to associate as meaning that if I manage to make it to my 30s without laser eye surgery, my prescription will be so intense that without the special lenses that cost around $50 more, the glass part of my glasses will be an inch thick. Possibly more.

3D vision is vastly overrated. Who even wants to go up stairs any more? Really, it's useless.

I'm too starting to think my eyesight is getting worse and that I should get a new pair of glasses, but I haven't gone to that kind of doctor in ages.

Could be worse. You could be completely blind. Also, thanks for going into further detail on astigmatism. I have it as well, but I was always under the impression that it meant my eye was misshapen, like a poorly drawn circle.

Nah, it's more like the lens (or some other part, I forget) of your eye goes more ovalish in shape, making things go more out of focus. Everything has to be a perfect circle if you want 20-20 vision. But you're right, it could be worse. This is just me ranting while simultaneously having a bit of fun with what I got. I mean, how many other people can honestly or even exaggeratedly say they have the visual capabilities of a half-blind cyclops?
