What was the last movie you watched?

Figured the forums could use a thread like this.

I'll start off:

I saw The World's End today and I pretty much regret missing it in theatres.

Funny and insanely frenetic. A perfect send-off to The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy.

Plus its viewpoint on what it means to be human is hilarious and somewhat poignant.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. TVB's doing a rerun of Harry Potter for some reason.

So, normally I don't watch movies that much, but I can say that I have just finished (as of like 30 minutes ago) finished Unlimited Blade Works.

Which sucked.

I say that not out of any VN-love (because I have not, and likely won't ever play it), but because I don't need to know anything about Fate/Stay Night to say that it sucks, because a lot of the ways in which it sucks are unrelated to it being a Fate/Stay Night movie.

But that's the latest movie I've seen!

Elaborate. The way it told the story was way too fast paced, as I have already said. It had no way of containing the story of the whole route in that time, and it was doomed to fail at that already. No arguments there. I already knew the story, so I simply like it for animating things I wanted to see in animation, not really as a movie.

In other words, the art, animation, and music score were nice at least.

That's why I'm forever waiting (most likely in vain) for a UBW full length anime so that they can finally adapt the story.

The last movie I watched was Scott Pilgrim. I tried to watch it as a thing separated from the comics but I'm not sure if I succeeded. It was... Good, but could've been much better. The small SFX were cool. The big ones were bad. And I prefered the comics' plot.

Basically, as you mention, it suffers from the obvious problem that would be had by anything that tries to adapt an approximately 25-episode anime into a hour-and-forty-five-minute movie - namely that they don't stop to explain anything. The whole expository bits where they should be introducing the Grail War, and giving people a background to work from is glossed over in a couple scenes that wouldn't make much sense if I hadn't already seen those parts of the anime (which is the same at that part). You're hit by a barrage of information that they don't explain - Gilgy mentions that he wants Rin so she can be the Grail Host, but it's a single line, and while he does eventually shove the Grail into Shinji's chest reverse Kah-Li-Mah style, they don't stop and make it clear that a human is needed for this. Summarized: Too much stuff, too little time.

Also, I'm betting that the new anime Ufotable is going to follow the Night path, but that's just a guess.

Well, the Fate/Stay Night anime adapted the Fate path, plus various lightly to heavily modified scenes from UBW and Heaven's Feel, and then they gave UBW that movie, which, as both of us appear to agree, did not do the story justice at all, even if the art was pretty and the animation and music quite good. It is entirely possible that the new thing will adapt Heaven's Feel, which is at least better than Fate, I suppose. I still really wish they would do a full UBW though.

In case you hadn't noticed, Fate is the bleh scenario. It lacks a lot of the dynamic characterization that the other two routes have, best seen by the fact that Shirou at the first is very similar to Shirou at the end. He didn't really change opinions on anything, whereas in UBW he completely rethinks his life goal and accepts the futility of it while reaffirming its overall moral nature and deciding to stick with it for as long as he is able to anyway, because he believes it to be the right thing to do.

As for Heaven's Feel... well, stuff happens. Not even going to try and summarize it. Regardless, the initial Shirou and HF!Shirou would never be mistaken for each other.

*shrugs* Haven't finished the anime, but according to people I know who have done the VN, when it comes to Shirou's development, Fate is "My ideals are correct", UBW is "My ideals are flawed, but I'm sticking to them", while Heaven's Feel is either "Screw my ideals" or *Archer's ideals*.

But anyway, we're getting off-topic.

As though that's in any way difficult or unexpected.

Anyway, I forgot, I saw Wolf of Wall Street the same day as Frozen, but it's a bit... eh. To make a short story shorter, Mom didn't know Wolf was R-rated. It proved to be a rather... nasty surprise five minutes into the movie.

I generally wouldn't have much to add here, but the last movie I watched was a few months ago. The Wizard of Oz. No, not that one, the first one. You know...

Fantastic Mr. Fox was on tv half an hour ago, I watched bits and pieces having already seen it a while back.

A cute and well made film with just enough Wes Anderson mannerisms to make it unique and odd.

And the most utterly incompetent farmers in the whole of fiction.

I just saw Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit sometime ago.

It's an ok film, rather predictable but I'll give it props for moving past of some of the cliched moments (e.g. Jack's wife Cathy being suspicious of him having an affair is taken care of fast and I was like "Thank You" once she accepted that Jack was part of the CIA)

Saw Gravity. It's wonderful. I saw it in 3D, and while the 3D was good, I don't think I would have minded seeing it in 2D. Though the film is beautiful, it's not really about the visuals, except inasmuch in that film is a visual medium and much of the story is told through images rather than words. Those things would all still come across and have as much impact in 2D.

So, yeah, all the people who said that I had to see Gravity in 3D were WRONG.

But I am really glad I saw Gravity in any form at all.

Trailers emphasize the mascots so kids will see it and bring their parents along.
