I'll admit, centralised services like Slack scare me a little. I've tried to steer away from these sorts of things where possible. It's part of the reason why I try not to use Skype any more.

What do people prefer about Slack? Would adding a chat system here work? I'd be really interested in knowing what I can do on the site to make it more useful for people.

It's been a while since I poked my head in here. I know lots of the Metaguards are on Slack and I've been there a little bit but overall I didn't find it to my taste.

Then again, for me the only reason I spent time in chat at all was due to peer pressure. I was actually enjoying the Neatchat for a while, but eventually it wasn't all that fun for me anymore.

I don't understand why people seek real-time chat at all, but I suspect that maybe having a chat service on the forum would appeal to them. Though if they're already satisfied with Slack they might not migrate back here.

For me, real-time chat is both more private and more public- a place where all the metaguards can have a great big conversation where anyone is free to jump in without having to worry about people outside the community. It feels simultaneously safer and more open.

Also, no character limits. That's nice.

The Floating Castle forums has a chat service on the forum, which has been used very seldom - though that's neither here nor there.
