Generic threads rant

Postby Dryunya on Sun Oct 14, 2012 4:19 pm

I don't know what to do with it (the situation is fubar even if I were a mod), but I just feel I have to get it off my chest.
I'm frustrated with how the threads are structured and named. I mean, threads with titles like "Transcript of psychiatrist's messages" or "What do we do with [Quixote]" are going on even when they have already reached their goal, and eventually get derailed into generic discussion threads. That basically means that if you need to follow some discussion about some character, you have to watch all his threads, because the information is smeared all over the folder. When this is repeated for every single character... it's frustrating, and clutters my mind. :( I believe now I know why I preferred the megathread. =/
(And yes, I might be contributing to the situation... :( )

I think I really should have taken the mod position back then - it's pretty much useless now, as correcting the situation would require rebuilding the threads from scratch. Also, if I did, you'd hate me by now. :)

"Anyway, I'm an idiot, and that's my rant".

Hey, I warned you this would happen. To be honest, though, I don't care since my OCD perfectionist mind cannot tolerate unread posts, so I read them all anyway.

Well, you make a pretty good point for someone who calls himself an idiot ;) (Or who quotes someone who has said that.)[joking]Let us discuss this is four other threads![/joking]

Do you propose locking threads more often? Because if you do, I'm all for it

Pretty good point, but I'm okay with my current arrangement, which is having tabs open like crazy.

I have a tab for the Timeline, the main TV Tropes page, the megathread, the forum, every twitter account, and every blog. I also have five other windows for research.screwing around in downtime purposes. The bits of off topicness are nothing compared to keeping track of all that. I don't really think there is enough of a problem to justify summary thread-lockings.

Same here. About the reading everything. I'm behind in my manga/anime/games/books all because I just keep reading every single post... So...

But locking threads as soon as they reach their conclusion could work... On the other hand, would create a gigantic pool of half full threads we'd need to open to pull back information... So... It has it's own problems.

First, I really don't like the idea of just locking the threads. I think what we are doing now is about as good as we are probably going to get for the time being. Let's face it, there are forums MUCH worse than this one.

Also, I'm still managing to keep up with my otakuness. As long as I keep my intake of caffeine high enough, I don't really need to sleep for about a week, so...

Yeah, the biggest problem there is the possibility of a Chekhov's Gun coming into play. If that happens, scouring a shriveled-up, weeks-old, locked thread would be a major pain. The easiest solution is to leave the threads open - in case of Chekhov.

It is more tolerable at my home PC with a ton of memory, but my laptop is puny and can't handle that much. Chrome is eating memory like freaking Pac-man. And, well, that approach still requires piecing loose ends together, and I have a terrible short-term memory. As well as long-term and mid-term. =/

Well, I didn't say I proposed a solution... That thread is called "rant" for a reason.
