About 648 individual species.
And I think the one that you reffer to about release when fainted is a 'Nuzlocke' challenge. Not very hard if you have a good team.

Yeah, it's kinda like that, but instead you keep em in a box, cuz you might need them for HM's.
And you have to nickname the pokemon (to develop bonds, and surprisingly, it kinda works)
