Yeah! But now I feel way young. I'm looking up at you guys. Through the internet. Because I'm automatically assuming older = taller.

Meh, if it helps I'm starting to feel like ancient over here  But I've only done Nano once, so...

I have a very hierachial mindset. My family raised me on the belief that my seniors know best. I suddenly feel so small o_O I had a strange mental image of me being very small and looking up at you guys but the light overhead makes your faces impossible to see (cos I don't know what you guys look like. Duh.) This is very strange..

Hehhhh highly unlikely, I'm only 5,2 you're probably taller than me already. And I've never felt especially confident in myself as 'a grown up' as they say. Sometimes I wonder if my brain is stuck at sixteen.

I don't know how many inches this is, but I went to calculate and I'm about ten centimetres taller. Um. My mental images are now being skewed in very strange waysss. Hah, I'm barely confident in myself as a teenager. I think I rely on authority a bit too much. When I think of eventually joining the workforce, I freak out about interviews.

Everyone is added there!

On your thoughts... I didn't map out the food chain. I don't want to get caught up in planning and end up not writing... So I'll just roll with it. But some sketching for the map is mandatory, if only to be able to give better descriptions. ^^

Now, on subversions... Taking the Gate example. Either there is a Gate or there is no Gate. If there is, it can either be closed or harvested. Those are the 'macro' options. It's what can happen with it regarless of setting.

-Now, if we assume the Gate is real, and the humans want to close it so they can get peace in the world, they'll send a party in the impossible quest, close it and be happy ever after. This is what is called "Playing it straight".

-Suberting it means adding twists to it: For instance, the humans assume the Gate needs to be closed for the reasons above, but when they get there after much hardship they find out that there never was a Gate!

-Another option, they know that the Gate colapsed on itself during the event. So, there is no Gate to close and they're boned. A scouting mission dicovers a new Gate hidden away that is keeping the flood of beasts! Now they have to act quickly on it and find the traitor who opened it!

In short, Subvert a trope or plot is to add twists to it. Mix and Match with other tropes and plots to take the narrative somewhere different than the usual endpoint of the main trope/plot you're using. You did some of it in the text you sent me (paint a Sue, deliver an awesome an well though out main character)

Lastly, on sentients... I'm not sure yet. It'll depend on how stuck I get, I guess. Writing another culture exposition will greatly improve my word count, sure, but it's also a lot of work to start from zero... If I go beyond the Civilization Ring, I might add it. In any case, it'll be open to use at any point if I need to. But they won't make an appearance soon in the story if they are to show up.

I understand how you feel. I felt like a bearded elder when people started bringing up ages here some time ago... I always felt like I was looking up and talking to seniors, only to find out I'm one of the older active members in here. It's a very strange feeling.

Yay!

Haha I know right. I planned a story out once, my first and only planning. Then I wrote about the first couple of introductory chapters and then more or less gave up 'cos it seemed too slow.

Oh. Ooooooooooh. I got confused looking at the TVTropes page. I still am, when I look at it. Aversion, inversion, subversion, double subversion, too confusing. From your examples, I suppose you've thought about possibilities already, aye? Its so hard to pick one plotline to follow through when all the plotlines seem equally good..

I think your story setting's set up really well and you're good to go. Jiayou! Wait, whoops. I mean, best of luck! It gets easier after you start :D

EDIT: IMO the 20-30 years are the prime of your life! Not quite bearded elder, more of vibrant humans!

Try to check the Tropes with a Playing With page. It will help you to understand it better.
Also, I'm thinking of joining the NaNoWriMo, but I'm not sure what I should write.

Just took a look at it, Victin. It's more explanatory, thank you, but at the same time I feel like I'll never get the hang of it. Ah well~

You know, this brings back an idea I had a few days ago... I can't know how many non-tropers we have or how familiar our tropers are... But, what do you guys think about a "TvTropes 101"? To familiarize the non tropers with our terminology and thought process, and to deal with doubts like yours on the Subversions of tropes.

(Surely I won't ask you to Invert the double subversion of a trope!)

But how would we do that?

Hahaha sure. I used to go on TVTropes, but then I found that when I went there, I would exit with a whole day missing. TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life and such. So I banned myself from it. I just broke that two-year ban by going to the page on Subversion. D:

My idea was to create a thread explaining what it is and some key terms we use a lot here. And then use the thread as a sort of question hub for the non-tropers to ask about whatever they don't understand.

Thing is, I don't know if we have enough of a non-troper public to actually make use of it.

Whoo! And another one joins the throng.

My personal method? Do as much as you can as quickly as you can so you can slow down a bit towards the end of the month and may still have time to do changes. It worked for me last year :D What name are you down as? We can be nanobuddies!
