At 50140, I have accomplished it! Of course, the story isn't quite done yet, its approaching the climax, but eh. This is the first time I've written so much and in such a short time too! ^_^

Pfft. You will ALWAYS, be glomped, Pixel. I see no reason why failing nano should deem you unglompworthy in mine eyes.

Not to necro an ancient thread...
But I recently finished my NaNo story. Anyone wanna help me read? It's uneditted and needs lots of work, which is why I'd like pointers on where to work on. Just PM me your email or something
Disclaimer: The back half is terrible. The front is better.

At the third stroke of the bell, it will be about 28 days to NaNoWriMo... BEEP.

How's preparation coming along for it, guys? Got any ideas for the new story?

Of course, I shouldn't be posting this NOW seeing as tomorrow is my last two papers which I'm almost certainly gonna mess up, but that doesn't matter, nanonanonanonanonano...

Okay, guys, it's the first day of NaNo and I still haven't totally figured out the plot for my novel. Could anyone help me out here? I need someone to bounce ideas off of and share spoilers with and brainstorm with and stuff. :P

(Also, if anyone's interested in making a Myrmidon Agent for a cameo or forty, it'd be very much appreciated, yesssss~ :P)

You can talk to me about it if you want. There should be some good ideas that you can use.

Here's my novel with the first official word count of 1920. It's going ok so far I suppose

So guys, might I tug your ears for some literary assistance here? I have reached that point of Nano wherein my story risks being eaten by the Suck Dragon.

See, I kinda off went too far from my planned track, and forgot to write a scene in a fast food place which introduces a rather important character. When I should have been writing THAT scene I was instead writing an entirely different scene set in the back of a car, which contains a lot of the things that should have just fit nicely into the Character-Introduction scene. Which still doesn’t exist. I’m 10 K words in and an important character has not yet shown up.

I m now stuck in a quandary trying to decide what to do. I could either:

a) Bite the bullet, delete the driving scene I’ve written, write the ‘correct’ scene to fit in its place, incorporating all the important stuff that was in the driving scene back where it was meant to go in the first place. This, ordinarily, is what I would do no later than the second draft.... the problem is, this is Nano. Doing that would mean cutting out a good chunk of my word count, which would leave me falling even further behind than I already am. Also there ARE some nice things in the driving scene that would help story progression, but don’t fit nicely into the fast food scene

b) I can just add the fast food scene, keep the driving scene anyway, and keep my word count as it is, even while knowing this is going to mean a whole chapter that’s basically repeating what the audience already knows. I can fix all of the problems in the second draft, but right now I need WORDS darn it.

I dunno, guys, it feels like I'm betraying some fundamental principle of my writing (namely, perfection comes from saying what you want to say in as few words as required, not by waffling a lot) by just keeping a scene in order to fit some arbitrary word count.

Then again, it strikes me as being JUST as silly for me to Edit like that when I don’t even have a first draft completed. Isn’t the whole POINT of NaNoWriMo to get out a draft so that you have something to work with and actually turn into a proper story?
Argh. Decisions.

There is no deleting in NaNo-- and even not in NaNo, it's best to not completely lose a scene until you're sure about the new draft. Italicize the one you want to get rid of so you know it's probably non-canon, then rewrite and move on.

Also it's NaNo, and a first draft, which both mean you're not supposed to worry or care if it's bad writing. Or bad plot. Or no plot. Those are things you clear up in draft two, after you've gotten the words out.

Just keep writing, Scar'. :)

I think should jut go with the second option. As you said you can always edit it later.

I'm with Qara. Yours is not a situation I envy, Scarab, but deleting the "wrong" scene, in NaNo, doesn't seem like the thing to do. If it were me, I'd write the fast food scene and mark it off in some way, or mark off the scene that I wanted it to replace, or both. Inflate that word count! It may not be an accurate measure of the worth or quality of your novel, but it's the measure we're using right now.

NaNo does all sorts of things to you that lead to bad writing practices, but it ALSO is useful as an exercise, so I say commit to the exercise, and focus on fixing the novel after you've completed the first draft, or at least, after you've written 50,000 words and earned the eternal respect and adoration of everyone.

(Because that's totally what happens when you win NaNo, right? *wishful thinking*)
