About the bot posts.

So are these real people doing this or just bots? If they are just bots do we have to worry about them eventually trying to take over someone's account and using it to post. Just wondering.

I think a little from column A, a little from Column B... unless computers really are intelligent enough these days to create entire profiles of people, complete with interests, DoB's and locations, which, knowing my minimal computer knowledge, they probably are.

I mean, how do a long of those... less tactful or private sites GET members anyway? My guess is viral marketing campaigns. This is just one of the methiods they use.

Either that or Skynet.

Well, there's plenty of scripts to automate registration process and post composition... But the ones here are WEIRD even by basement rat standards.

I mean, we have a few thousand visits per day... Who in blazes all these bots get here? We're nowhere popular enough to attract this kind of attention every single day. And your common low level spambot can't get past default security...

Well now you've got me thinking...

Could they be coming from other sites? I mean, we have been mentioned on Wired, right? And there's also a deviantart advert going around that site, and they have a LOT of members, maybe the hits are coming from there.

It's possible, we do jump between a lot of sites constantly too which all link back here in some way or another.
If you ever need to ask the questions "Am I needed? Should I help them?" The answer is always yes. Always.

Well here's the deviantart advert. That site has millions of users, and just casual clicking could bring a fair few people here.

Either that or there's soemthing suspicious going on.

True. That could improve trafic significantly, but it brings the bots directly from there... A bot scans DA and finds a outbound link, automatically jumps to scan the site on the link... In that case we'd need a better Captcha to stop automated account registration...

That or someone is creating the accounts manually, in which case we should find him. And stab him in the liver. Inside the coffee room, of course, so we can do it forever!

Yes, yes we should.

Although on second thoughts, I dunno if we should bother, he will have created his own personal hell all by himself, I can't think of anything LESS fun than having to create fake user name accounts and spam forums all day...

Nah, for the manual account theory to make sense, it must be someone involved with this, personally. No stranger would waste time working on something for no reason. Unless he is insane. But insane people tend to do things more openly because they don't care at all.

Seriously, tough would there be any point? There's been at LEAST ten or so of these things today.

Numbers game. Shot enough bullets and you're bound to hit something. It's what spambots do. The problem here is that the registration captha is too weak to keep them out of the forum.

Well I'd make you cookies anyway.

I'm the same actually, but that may be more because I have terrible eating habits. Namely I keep FORGETTING to.

I'm exactly the same. I'm a bit over six feet, but I don't weigh a lot at all. When I actually do eat, my eating habits are awful, but I never actually gain weight for some reason. That's WHEN I do eat... Which is rarely. Maybe one and sometimes two meals in a 24 hour period.

The bot threat continues. Just talked to Ed, but he said there isn't anything he can do about the capitcha, unfortunately.

Also, one of the images in the most recent spam post by that bot is... well...

BEHOLD! THE FACE OF HORRORS!
