Size, weight, fire-rate, ammo capacity, impact force and, most importantly, looks.

Say, Jade's rifles (if on the real world, I'm still too early in HS to know how these things work there)? Big, sort of heavy, low ammo capacity and slow firing. But ridiculous impact force. Bulletproof vests are paper to these things.

A pistol, would have a slightly better ammo capacity, being light and small so it's easy to carry, but has a fairly low impact force so it can't punch through bulletproof vests. Generally speaking.

But really, it's Gurt. He's a textbook Badass. Pretty much any gun you give him will work.
