Addressing Morgan's visit to our chatroom. I'll not talk about the contents of the discussion in here. Only about the mechanical considerations it brought to table.

First, it was an awesome and interesting development. The relevant chatlog is preserved in about 10 different forms by now, so whoever missed it, just go to the Cabal section for all the information.

As to the effective process. It was a complete MESS. There was little order, with a lot of people talking at the same time and not allowing Oberon to speak. I was forced to issue Ban Threats just to make people stop posting emoticons and meaningless messages, like 6 or so messages to the extent of "Ok, keep going". The lack of administrative tools makes it so that the Chatroom is NOT a good place to talk openly to fictionals.

One attempt was to have everyone PM their questions to me and other 2 room administrators so that we could forward them orderly. Unfortunately, this idea also was a total failure, as most didn't comply and continued to send messages in the main room. Wacky in particular has already voiced his dissatisfaction with this measure in the content thread.

I'm sorry if I sounded like I intended to censor you, that was not my intent. It was merely an attempt at making the discussion more orderly and helpful to us all. But the overall result shows that our chatroom as it currently stands is not prepared to deal with such events.

Even though I did threaten to issue Bans and told the other room admins to do the same, no one was banned from the conversation. And even though I and others insisted for people to shut up and let Morgan speak her piece, no one was actually silenced. I hope to let it be very clear that no Metaguard, lurker or regular, known username or not, was stopped from staying in the room or post in there for the duration of Morgan's visit.

My conclusion is that we do not want to use the chatroom for future interactions with the characters. There is no way to enforce an orderly discussion at all.

You'll be made unable to post new messages. At the moment, only H, Qara and Scarab have been issued temporary bans. If you do have a problem of some sort, it is not because you were banned as the current banned hosts list is empty.

Everytime I try to type in my nickname it won't register me and let me into the chat.

I will type a different name instead of Jester and see if it works.

People will recognize me as OWWOTC anyways so it shouldn't be a problem.

Jester-- it may just be a glitch on your end. Try refreshing the page, or restarting your computer, or testing from another computer in the same building to see if that will work.

Pixel-- I have to say, I found the repeated "shut up"s more irritating to get through than the many questions. I don't think it would be such a bad thing to have fictionals back in the chatroom, so long as we figure out our technique first.
Here's an easy anti-spam/ anti-ninja trick: the chatroom shows if someone's writing something. So how about, if you see someone other than the visiting fictional is writing, then hold off until it's been said. Then we just need to all agree not to abuse that, and to ask what we want then sit back and give others a turn for a bit.

Qara. That's the civil ideal, I agree. But it wasn't like that at all. True, the repeated shut ups are -not- enjoyable at all. Not even to us typing them, but mostly people just kept spamming messages. Many questions were left without answers because of the chaos. Even though some users DO wait for the "writing" icon to vanish before typing a message of their own, most were not doing so. That path of action requires that all agree to do that, and it was not the case this time. I have no way to guarantee that the next time will be different.

Hell the fanboy in me is having a nerdgasm! I was talking to THE Morgana Lefey! I so want to do that again! I know the meta she's-not-really-real implications, no need to crucify me for that statement.

But keeping track of the chatroom I can say: It will be a mess. I took nearly one hour to sort through the logs and upload the condensed version to Adell. If they do it again, now that they established the precedent, there will be even more people in there, as a result even more messages overloading the conversation. And no chance for the fictional in question to type even two lines in a row.

Can I just say, as civilly as possible, that I believe that respect and consideration towards one another takes a much higher priority over getting everybody's questions answered or having a fictional get his/her say. I did not like being told to shut up in that chatroom, I don't care what the circumstances are. All things considering, I was not spamming. I said a couple of things, and I got singled out and told to shut up. I did not like it, and I kind of got the impression that it was the content of my comments that people had a problem, and not the quantity.

I did not like the idea of only having a few of us represent all of us. For one thing, I did not feel like anybody who was chosen to represent us had my best interests in mine. I was really the only one there who was not interested in trying to get proof for their claims or hearing their theories. All I cared about what getting them to answer for their past crimes, and if I had transferred my questions to any of the other players, I had serious doubts that my questions would get passed through or that they weren't going to be altered in order to sound 'nicer'. Now, if Qara had been there at the time, I would have no problem having him represent me, since our interests are about the same. But as it was, I wanted to speak for myself in the chat because I didn't trust anyone else to say what I wanted to say.

And here's the thing, we all wanted our questions answered. We all want to have a say. Yes, it's important that we all do our part not to spam with pointless emoticons or repeat statements, but on the other hand, censorship is not the answer. Being rude to one another is DEFINITELY NOT the answer.

I want the chatroom to be a fun place at all times. If another fictional does show up there, we do need to figure out ways to converse with them without things going crazy. But as far as I'm concerned, the worst part of that discussion was all the verbal abuse being shouted at one another. And frankly, I am embarrassed with the way things were handled. And I'm still a little upset.
